Photography trip inside the land of Rio Lagartos's Biosphere with Diego
The experience : Photography trips are designed especially for Photographers. The guide is skilled at finding the species of birds you are looking for. Not disturbing the wildlife is an important part of this. I know this land by heart because I lived here my whole life and I'm passionate by nature. The experience is 4 hours long and can be designed to find the species you are looking for. The Bird List of the Bio Reserve can be used to make a wish list for photography here. I will do my best to help you find them. Below are just a small sample of the 395 species that have been registered here.
What's include : The boat, the captain which is a certified natural guide native from Rio Lagartos
Number of person : 1 or 2, the price is by boat
The Host : I am Diego Nunez, I am an experienced and trained bird guide, naturalist and avid fly fisherman who pioneered eco-tourism in Rio Lagartos more than 20 years ago when I established my family business (since 1995) based at the Ria Maya Restaurant.
I work now with my son Diego and my daughter Andrea who are in training for land birding and are qualified for the boat birding tours. My wife Matildé runs the restaurant "Ria Maya Restaurante"(formerly Restaurante Isla Contoy) and "Posada Diego and Matilde".
I had attended many classes and workshops on nature, birds and preservation of the Bio-reserve and Petenes (fresh water springs) including the RARE Nature Guide Training Course Yucatan Peninsula (April 1998). I studied with Barbara McKinnon in the first group of birding guides she helped train (1996) and I had continually helped to add to the bird counts that she keeps and publishes for Rio Lagartos and the Yucatan Peninsula. I had personally added 9 new birds to the list. The count now is 395 for Rio Lagartos and 555 for the Yucatan.
I am a qualified nature and birding instructor who has trained many of the guides in Rio Lagartos and has given classes to many groups of children and adults to help further their appreciation and understanding of the natural world around them.
I worked extensively with Pronatura, Ninos and Crias and other environment and Goverment Groups such as Conanp. I assisted visiting scientists and biologists with their research efforts and has been involved with bird monitoring, flamingo banding, crocodile tagging, maintaining water flow in the area's fresh water springs, reforestation, as well as animal rescue work !
